What Is a 2D Barcode

Data Matrix is a unique machine-readable symbol capable of storing a large amounts of information within a small physical area.

Data Matrix symbols are capable of carrying 25 to 100 times more information than the typical bar code. The only limitation to the symbology is the quality of the print your printer is capable of producing. Even when produced at sizes small enough for electronics components and other small items, Data Matrix and other 2D symbologies have the capacity to encode a unique serial number, lot code, configuration data, time stamps and other production information. 2D item identification is becoming widespread in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. In America, a number of federal drug pedigree requirements have recently been enacted or are pending. These requirements require tracking chain-of-custody for prescription medications by lot code and/or serial number. RFID is frequently proposed for these applications, but 2D bar codes can handle the data requirements and often integrate more easily with legacy systems and processes throughout the supply chain.

Currently Turkey, France and California to name a few, are all changing packaging requirements through increased traceability legislation and the utilisation of 2D barcodes, serialised numbers and increased levels of human readable information. These changes come into effect from late 2009 in Turkey, 2010 in France and on a rolling basis thereafter.This is hoped to help combat the counterfeit pharmaceutical market that is costing the global economy billions of dollars.
