Intrinsic safety (IS) is a protection technique for safe operation of electronic equipment in explosive atmospheres. The concept was developed for operation of process control instrumentation in hazardous areas.
There is a European Directive, called the ATEX Directive No.1992/92, and is concerned with the risks from fire and explosion arising from flammable substances stored or used in the workplace. Regulations apply at most workplaces where flammable substances are stored or used, for example, factories where flammable liquids are present or where flammable dusts are produced in the process.

How to determine which device is best for you. At VisionID we have trained technicians who can advise you of the best solution for working in hazardous environments. The choices can seem complex however here is a basic guide to the environment “zones” which determine the type of device required.
Zone 0 |
A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is present continuously or for long periods or frequently. |
Zone 1 |
A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air or flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally. |
Zone 2 |
A place in which an explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture with air of flammable substances in the form of gas, vapor or mist is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only. |
Zone 20 |
A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is present continuously, or for long periods or frequently. |
Zone 21 |
A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally. |
Zone 22 |
A place in which an explosive atmosphere in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in air is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only. |
