About Renishaw

For over 30 years, Renishaw has been an innovator in metrology, the science of measurement, enabling measurements to be taken to international standards.

The company's first product, the touch-trigger probe had been invented by David McMurtry, now Sir David McMurtry, Chairman and Chief Executive, to solve a specific inspection requirement for the Olympus engines used on Concorde. The first Renishaw company was established in 1973 by him and John Deer, now Deputy Chairman. This innovative product went on to revolutionise post-process inspection of machined components.

The Requirement

Renishaw has recently completed the construction of state-of-the-art production lines at its manufacturing facility in Swords, Co. Dublin. The new production facility is an extension to the existing manufacturing plant and incorporates the most advanced technology available for a facility of its nature.

To compliment this advanced technology Renishaw enlisted the help of VisionID to facilitate the introduction of barcode label printers and scanners to this new production facility. Key to the Renishaw requirement was the ability to incorporate and communicate with the new Syteline Software ERP system that had also been installed.

As well as supplying equipment for the production floor a requirement was also voiced to extend the scanner and printer requirements to the new shipping and stores area which had also been recently constructed.

The Solution

Having considered all options and consulted with Renishaw engineers VisionID were quickly able to recommend the Honeywell 3800g hand held scanner for use on the production line and to incorporate this with an Intermec PM4i label printer.

Honeywell 3800g

The 3800g is built to deliver world-class performance for a broad range of applications in manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and all points in between. Featuring the ideal balance of performance, durability, ergonomics and connectivity options, the 3800g will deliver years of hassle-free service.

The 3800g is the newest member of the legendary 3800 family of linear imagers. The first linear imager to earn the Adaptus Imaging Technology brand, the new 3800g is powered by Adaptus 5.0, delivering breakthrough linear imaging performance and versatility. Fast, intuitive barcode reading across a range of high and low density codes, the 3800g quickly reads even damaged and poorly printed barcodes - all in a single device. The 3800g boasts USB, Serial (RS-232) and Keyboard wedge (PS/2) connection options.

Intermec PM4i

The PM4i is the first industrial-strength label printer to offer integrated serial, USB and ethernet interfaces as standard equipment. It can operate as a "smart client" eliminating the PC from the application while also running peripheral devices such as scanners, weight scales and other printers

This is an extremely versatile bar code label printer. There are up to five interface ports that can be used simultaneously. The EasyCoder PM4i includes serial, parallel, USB, internal EasyLAN Ethernet, and EasyLAN Wireless. The magnetic QuickMount printhead eliminates hassles and the need to call a service technician. The printhead is replaced quickly and easily with the magnet and u-brackets ensuring proper alignment. The double-clutching ribbon mechanism means that you are no longer restricted to ribbon types based on how they are wound. The handy, inexpensive and PC-compatible Compact Flash memory technology provides quick and easy upgrades of firmware, fonts and memory.

The Outcome

The Honeywell 3800g scanner and Intermec PM4i printers are now in situ at Renishaw manufacturing facility in Swords as well as being located within the shipping and stores area. To date the hardware has worked seamlessly with the recently incorporated Syteline Software ERP system and the choice of scanner and printer solutions further echoes the professionalism of the VisionID team to accurately identify hardware solutions that best suit a particular environment.
