The Requirement

In late 2006 express parcel delivery company DPD Ireland  approached VisionID about introducing a new high-performance mobile computer and scanner system for its 66,000 sq ft central distribution hub and warehouse facility located in Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

The objective was to optimise the use of warehouse operators in extreme environments and link into their existing wireless network.

The Solution

As authorised Symbol (Motorola) partners VisionID were quick to respond with the WT4000 which is designed for warehouse and distribution customers that require hands-free operation. Worn on either the wrist or the hip, Symbol's WT4000 series of wearable mobile computers allow users to move freely and scan data, access business-critical information, and accurately perform data entry in real-time.

For maximum flexibility, Symbol’s new wearable mobile computer also offers headset support for voice picking. Worn on the hip or wrist, the device brings an IP-54 sealing rating and can survive drops to concrete from as high as 4-feet (1.2-meter). The device itself runs WinCE 5.0 Pro on a 520MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor and packs-in 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 1.2, and 2.8-inch QVGA display with backlight. Fortunately, it weighs a relatively light 11.2-ounces (320.3-grams) with battery to keep fatigue to a minimum.
