Print processes
Offset litho - this is the most widely used print process which allows accurate pantone colour matching and inclusion of tints, half tones and other fine detail. Where necessary other print types can be employed in conjunction with litho printing to achieve special effects. ie. metallic colours. Print is under the laminate surface of the card providing a suitable surface for subsequent dye sublimation print or other personalising processes.
Silk screen - cost effective solution for smaller quantity production where tints and half tones are not included within the card design. This is the most effective process for producing strong intense colours as the inks are opaque. It is also used for metallic colours such as gold and silver. As with litho printing the print is sub surface.
Digital - a four-colour process solution for small to medium volume production where designs involve full colour printing or tints/half tones. As with the above processes the print is protected by the pvc surface of the card.
Foil - used to apply 'mirror finish' metallic print, holographic devices, numbering, scratch off panels and certain types of signature panel. The print is on the surface necessitating a 'white out' box from the overlay print around foiled areas when overprinting using the dye sublimation process.
Matt or gloss lamination - by using different lamination plates cards can be finished with either the traditional gloss finish (essential if cards are being retrospectively dye sublimation printed), or matt finish. The matt option has an 'in vogue' look and greatly reduces the scratching of the surface of the card when in use. This is especially pertinent where the background of the card design includes solid areas of dark colours.
