We’ve Helped Connect Social Media with a Social Night Out

Some of Ireland’s top nightclubs, including Dublin’s Krystal and Cork’s Havana Browns, have achieved a technology first: clubbers will be able to use RFID tags to trigger Facebook status updates to tell friends what food or drinks they are enjoying and be able to share other content, like photos.

Clubbers in venues involved in the project, from Cork to Belfast, and Limerick to Dublin, can sign into their Facebook accounts as soon as they arrive at the venue and their accounts are synched with an RFID key fob. Every time they swipe the fob on a staff member’s tablet computer it updates their acc

ounts to upload a photo, food or drink image or description or information about prizes they may have won on the night.

Among the clubs involved are Sense in Cookstown, Co Tyrone; Mynt in Belfast; Krystle in Dublin; Havana Browns in Cork; The Foundry in Carlow; The Icon in Limerick, as well as the CHQ building in Dublin’s IFSC.

The live, social networking link is made possible under an entertainment project involving Clonmel-based VisionID, international communications company Ogilvy and technology developed by FISH Technologies.

The technology challenge involved in connecting Irish clubbers with their online social network in real time was to deliver wireless coverage in 100pc of the nightclubs, VisionID’s Cathal Murtagh explained.

VisionID has worked with major retailers, hospitals, pharmaceutical firms and distribution companies, but the Ogilvy project was their first for the nightclub industry.

“We used the Motorola AP5131 wireless access point throughout the venues in conjunction with a number of tablet computers. The Motorola AP5131 provides all the latest wired and wireless security standards, as well as the speed required to support the most demanding applications, including voice and video.

“The ability to take advantage of the AP5131’s mesh features allowed us to seamlessly work in each venue without the need to run cables – something which was not an option.

“The Mesh Network we put in place provided full, wireless coverage throughout the nightclub, over multiple floors. We had no issues overcoming the challenges provided by a large number of people gathered together accessing both the network all at once across the various floors.”

Technology clubbers will come to expect?

Murtagh said he hopes the innovation will spur more venues to invest in cutting-edge technology savvy clubbers will come to expect as they connect, not just in the same venue but with their online social network on a night out.

“Ogilvy Dublin is constantly searching for new ways to tap into and realise the power of social media and word-of-mouth marketing,” Kim Behan, account director at Ogilvy, explained.

“It is one of the first, if not the fist, experiential campaign in Ireland that utilised RFID technology, allowing consumers to share their experience live on Facebook. The results we have seen in terms of awareness and engagement are fantastic and VisionID were a crucial component in helping us to bring the technology to life,” Behan said.

Lowes chain of home improvement stores are the second largest worldwide retailers of home improvement products. In order to retain its market share and perhaps compete with the rival Home Depot, Lowe’s is on track to deploy 42,000 iPhones so that employees using them can answer customer queries and also follow the now so popular system of ringing out purchases. The system being introduced at Lowe’s bears a striking resemblance to the one implemented in the Apple Retail Stores, except for the EasyPay devices being used there. The EasyPay devices have the same iPod touch hardware. These in-store units at Apple are handled by a select group of employees for multiple tasks including specifically, ringing out customers, checking inventory levels, and sending email receipts to customers for purchases made. Lowe’s is likely to follow the same route for higher efficiency at its stores. Stores like Old Navy are already using the Apple version of the system.

Lowe’s will be sending 25 devices to every store in its chain and is simultaneously introducing MyLowe’s, an online app for its customers. This app will facilitate their viewing of manuals, warranties and specific products like paint formulae. While details are not known, if the devices are very similar to the ones used in the Apple Stores, they are likely to be equipped with a special hardware package that includes a credit card processing slot and an extended battery.

Till now Lowe’s staff was using scanner guns for tracking inventory levels and for checking product details. The calling, texting and email features will continue.

Interestingly, arch rival Home Depot had only last year invested $60 million on Motorola portable devices to improve efficiency in its stores. Perhaps, feeling technically behind, Lowe’s has followed suit with a top-of-the-line device besides also spending a whopping amount on replacing 72,000 computer monitors with the latest flat screen ones and extend data pipelines to more than 1700 stores. At present the devices are being tested at one of the Lowe outlets in Mooresville, North Carolina.

The handheld device also doubles up as a mobile phone and log for drivers, eliminating a lot of administration activity.

Musgrave says the asset-tracking feature of the technology, which allows them check where every single metal delivery trolley or ‘combi’ is at all times, has resulted in cost savings that fully justify the investment in this technology.

As part of a major investment drive to boost efficiencies, it looked into mobile computing and asked VisionID to develop a handheld platform for its logistics team and delivery drivers.

Within its in-store operations, Musgrave was already using Motorola handheld computers installed and managed by VisionID. The devices were working well and VisionID was selected by Musgrave to help with the new, €500,000 project.

Boosting business performance with mobile devices

Musgrave selected Motorola’s rugged MC75A Enterprise Digital Assistants (EDAs) and VisionID supported the implementation and deployment of the system throughout the island of Ireland, according to Stephen Bennett, supply chain systems manager of Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland.

“We continually seek to enhance business performance and drive efficiencies,” Bennett said. “We recently deployed a mobile computing platform based on Motorola’s MC75 Enterprise Digital Assistants.

“The MC75As are prepared, deployed and maintained by VisionID. As with any major IT deployment, we had some teething issues. But the support, professionalism and attention to detail of VisionID and Motorola ensured problems were resolved quickly.

“We are delighted with the technology. The initial focus of the project – to use bar-code labelling to track, trace and ensure the safe return of our delivery containers – is quickly delivering an excellent ROI for the business.

“We are also achieving efficiency and accuracy benefits by using the technology to collect electronic proof of delivery, optimise fleet utilisation and route guidance, and automate reporting and eliminate paper trials,” Bennett added.
